When our customers solve complicated engineering challenges for their customers using our end-of-arm-tooling (EOAT) they not only showcase how versatile our products are but remind us that a system’s success is not just about the quality of the tools used in it but the integrity of the system’s design.

In Concord, Ohio, Steven Douglas Corp. (SDC Automation) has been partnering with their customers to develop custom automated systems for over 25 years and has strived to exceed every standard they raised by increasing safety and efficiency with each of the applications that are entrusted to them.
When SDC was recently tasked with developing a large-scale manufacturing process that had a smaller footprint, accommodated different-sized parts, and could multi-task, SDC mechanical and electrical engineer Dan Garr knew they would need a high-capacity tool changer with a variety of add-on utility modules to meet the requirements. Machine automation can be streamlined by using one robot for multiple processes and the SDC team customized three different ATI components to work so well within the robotic system, the customer has already ordered another one.
The tool changer they chose was an ATI QC-160 Robotic Tool Changer, which worked seamlessly with the FANUC servo motors. Dan said, “The QC-160 Tool Changer made it very easy to get the exact power and signals needed to and from the end-effector and the R19 Electrical Module connector having built-in cables for the lock/unlock sensors, simplified the wiring process. Picking up a tool with a 6-axis robot is made easier thanks to ATI Tool Changers having a good lead-in when mating up, which allows for slight misalignments.”
The Tool Changer Servo Modules worked perfectly with the FANUC servo motor on one of the end-effectors and included a built-in connector for a battery module to keep the servo's encoder powered up when the tool was disconnected, which allowed for quick re-activation of the servo upon picking up the tool, rather than having to re-home it every time.

Does your facility have a robot doing only one task? Maximize the investment made in that robot by using ATI products and integrators like SDC Automation to help configure a system that will enable your company, and your equipment, to be more efficient.
