ATI Industrial Automation recently collaborated with CORE, a consortium that has developed the most advanced machining and IT technologies in the stone industry for over 15 years, to create the LeanMachine. This state-of-the-art manufacturing solution for the stone industry is based on robotic engineering and artificial intelligence. The system consists of a large environmentally-protected ATI Force/Torque Sensor and a Six-Axis Industrial Robot equipped with a cutting tool that machines the stone. The tool force is a critical issue because it improves the quality of the manufactured products, mainly during polishing operations, and it reduces the tool wear.

The LeanMachine solution uses an ATI Omega191 Six-Axis Force/Torque Sensor to measure and control the tool force. This system allows any stone factory to optimize all product-finishing stages increasing throughputs when compared with human dependent processes. ATI’s Omega191 Force/Torque Sensor is engineered to handle the inherent stress of heavy-duty applications like this LeanMachine stone cutting system. ATI Force/Torque Sensors can withstand overloads between five and twenty times the rated measurement range, making them a perfect fit for this very demanding stone cutting operation.

ATI’s Force/Torque Sensor System measures six components of force and torque (Fx, Fy, Fz, Tx, Ty, Tz) and features a compact design, hardened stainless steel or aircraft aluminum construction, high-speed output, overload protection, span temperature compensation options, and high signal-to-noise ratio. ATI offers a wide range of custom and standard sensor models from 17 mm to 330 mm and can include environmental protection (IP) on most models. With over 30 years of robotic end-effector innovation, ATI’s engineering department is the largest of its kind for a robotic tooling company, and is focused on developing cost-effective, state-of-the-art products and solutions.
