Robotic Tool Changers Utilized in New Robot Combat Television Show
Apex, NC,
February 25, 2013
The Syfy television channel is premiering a new robot fight show starring eight-foot-tall, thousand-pound humanoid robots called Robot Combat League. It has sparked a new era of gladiatorial combat, where in each episode two robots will fight over three rounds in front of a throng of cheering fans. Premiering February 26th at 10pm, this new show will demonstrate technology that can mimic human fighting motions while utilizing specifically-customized weapons. Robot Combat League features twelve teams consisting of a unique robot fighter, a human “shadow boxer” that wears a suit translating their movements to their robot fighter, and a robotics engineer. Winners of each week’s fight move on to the next round, culminating with one winner at the end of the season.
ATI Industrial Automation’s Robotic Tool Changers, manufactured at their state-of-the-art production facility located in Apex, NC, are one of the visible components being used in the arms of the robot fighters on Robot Combat League. Traditionally used in industrial manufacturing, ATI’s Tool Changers provide flexibility to automation applications by enabling robots to automatically change end-effectors. ATI’s Tool Changers act as a robotic-wrist, quick-connect on the robot fighter’s arm, allowing them to easily change damaged fist attachments.
This idea came to life when Craig Plestis, of leading reality show production company Smartdog Entertainment, teamed up with robotics expert Mark Setrakian to pitch Robot Combat League to the Syfy Channel. Setrakian’s resume includes developing life-saving robotic systems, and creature effects and animatronics for films like Men In Black, The Grinch, and Hellboy. There is no doubt robotic technology has come a long way; we now have robots that fight fires, search dangerous buildings, assist in performing surgery, and even robots that you can control with your mind. All of which represent a huge advancement in what was only thought to be possible a few years ago.
ATI offers a wide selection of Tool Changer models to cover a variety of applications. All ATI Tool Changers feature their patented Fail-Safe Locking Mechanism and No-Touch Locking™ technology. Key features include excellent repeatability, high rigidity, and a lightweight and compact design. More information on the Robot Combat League here.
