INNOVATIVE FLEXIBLE AUTOMATION FOR POWERTRAIN ASSEMBLY
ABB Powertrain Robot Systems and Ford Powertrain Manufacturing Engineering recently completed the joint development of a Flexible Cylinder Head Assembly (FCHA) system. The ABB FCHA design improves upon traditional serial assembly systems by allowing multiple cylinder head architectures to be assembled simultaneously without the need for time-consuming and production-halting changeovers. ATI Industrial Automation’s Robotic Tool Changers and Six-Axis Force/Torque Sensors are featured extensively in the FCHA system and are integral to its success.

A SOLUTION TO CHALLENGING ASSEMBLY TASKS
Automating assembly tasks that are performed manually can offer great potential for increasing efficiency, but pose several challenges. Some complex assembly tasks, such as inserting camshafts into engine blocks, require the assembler to “feel” their way to the correct assembly position. Robots alone cannot accurately measure and compensate for the contact forces experienced during these assembly tasks. ATI Industrial Automation's Six-Axis Force/Torque (F/T) Sensors and Universal Robots can now accomplish a variety of difficult assembly tasks using Force Control.

ATI AND BOS INNOVATIONS CREATE EFFICIENT AND COMPACT ROBOTIC WELDING CELL
BOS Innovations, FANUC America Corporation, and ATI Industrial Automation collaborated to create a compact robotic work cell that utilizes multiple material joining technologies. This cost-effective work cell optimized the number and flexibility of the industrial robots by incorporating multiple ATI Heavy Duty Robotic Tool Changers. There were constraints with the spot welding environment's size and with the flexibility of the cable and harness, making it clear that automatic robotic tool changing would be necessary.
