The William Herschel Telescope has captured the first evidence of the existence of supermassive black holes, as well as the first observation of a gamma-ray burst. Although larger, more technologically-advanced telescopes have come into existence, WHT has become a hotspot for testing new equipment in recent years. A collaborative project called WEAVE is capitalizing on the telescope's versatility. Using a robotic system alongside WHT's powerful optics, WEAVE renders detailed spectra of thousands of stars. Not just visible stars we can see in the night sky, but colder, more distant stars that can only be seen with deep imaging.
