Mechanical Engineer – Force/Torque Sensor Product Design Team
Location: Apex, NC     

Job Description

In our continued quest for excellence in our products and service, we are seeking an experienced, hardworking, team-oriented Mechanical Design Engineer to join the Force/Torque Sensor Product Design Team. Design Engineers on the F/T Sensor Product Design Team work to develop the next generation of robotic autonomy and flexibility by designing components that enable force feedback. From the automotive industry to robotic surgery to the surface of Mars, F/T sensors allow robots and their operators to sense and react to the physical environment, improving processes, procedures and science.
  • Design and modify robotic force/torque sensor end effectors. You will work as part of a Scrum team with other Engineers, Designers, Applications, Sales and Manufacturing personnel to complete design projects.
  • Push the limits of current technology through innovative solutions to unique customer requests.
  • Manage projects with lower overall scope complexity including cross-functional communication, planning and alignment.
  • Clearly see, plan and create connections between assignments as they build into a project.
  • Support Sales and Applications teams on basic technical questions related to existing product data.
  • Determine and establish specifications and standards and support the technical documentation team in the development of manuals.
  • Coordinate the testing of prototypes to ensure adherence to functional specifications, and evaluate data based on physical testing and simulation.
  • Investigate and resolve technical problems involving product performance, corrective action investigations, and other actions as needed to support the goals of the organization.
  • Work with component suppliers, manufacturers, outside labs and other service providers as needed to assure the most cost effective, robust designs are implemented.
  • Work with the purchasing, planning, and NPI teams as needed to assure new products can be manufactured effectively and released to production on time.
  • Support existing products through an ongoing process of continuous improvements and engineering changes to enhance performance and manufacturability.
  • Communicate with Managers, Manufacturing and Sales staff concerning design projects.
  • Fulfill various project support roles such as contribute ideas, support DFMEAs and other design reviews, as well as support with drawing related activities


    Skills Requirements
  • Proficient in SolidWorks CAD
  • Able to use SolidWorks EPDM to manage and maintain CAD model and drawing revisions according to ATI Design Control procedures
  • With guidance, able to manage low/medium complexity projects with several components, sourcing requirements
  • Lead design reviews, status meetings
  • Able to produce high quality finished engineering drawings of all parts
  • Good working knowledge of GD&T, industry standards including ASME Y14.5-2009
  • Able to select components based on specific requirements
  • Good working knowledge of machine tool & fabrication
  • Good working knowledge of Materials selection
  • Good working knowledge of Mechanical systems
  • Able to perform relevant engineering calculations
  • Able to perform competitor research and analysis, where applicable
  • Proficient understanding of product line’s Mechanical systems and functionality requirements
  • Able to lead more complex troubleshooting assembly issues
  • Able to identify areas for product/process improvement with suggested solutions
  • Proficient with Microsoft programs (Word, Excel, Outlook, Access, and Visio)
  • Finite Element Analysis (FEA)
  • Electronic circuits design
  • Coding (Python, LabVIEW, MATLAB, etc.)
  • Thermal Analysis
  • Scrum/Agile/Lean working knowledge
  • Data Analytics
  • Engineering Optimization
  • Robotics
  • Hands-on experience building/machining/wiring/etc.

    Education Requirements
  • BSME or equivalent required
  • Master’s degree in engineering discipline
